Becoming “lean” is a learning experience and involves a lot of commitment and support from all the members of an organisation. It definitely isn’t a layman’s task. You need the right team of consultants for proper guidance and execution of strategies. And that’s when we, Trine Group come to the scene.

lean management

Lean management is a philosophy that includes the usage of a collection of tools and techniques in the operational processes, aiming at the optimisation of time, resources, assets and productivity, along with an upgradation of the quality of products and services to a superior level. To put it simply, the primary goal of lean management is generating value without any wastage or the creation of maximum utility by doing smart business. Lean management can be traced back to the popular management philosophy of Toyota known as TPS (Toyota Production System); an integrated socio-technical system, which strives for total elimination of waste, overburden and unevenness in all areas to ensure smooth and efficient work style of all members.

Important aspects of lean philosophy/culture:

  • Lean is a culture of ongoing improvement followed by every team of an organisation
  • Lean involves the execution of scientific experimentation method along with the study of operational procedures to find scope of improvement
  • Lean is giving respect to the customer as well as those who do the work and manage the workforce
  • Lean is the removal of waste by identifying value added work
  • Lean is focused on improving the work pattern and not on blaming people for their mistakes
  • Lean is an interruption free flow process

Lessons learnt from generations of experiments in management has been incorporated into lean management like the works of Frederick Taylor, Henry Ford, Dr. Deming, Stewhart and many others.

lean management

Womack and Jones define 5 principles of Lean management in their book “The Machine That Changed The World”. These principles include the following:

1. Define value as perceived by the customer

Value is the specific requirement of the customer for which he is willing to pay for. Hence, define value from the customer’s perspective and not based on your assumptions about the need of the customer.

2. Map value stream

A series of interrelated processes that produce the value is known as value stream. Every process consists of value adding and non-value adding steps. After determining the value, the next step is to remove or minimise the non-value adding steps.

3. Create value flow

After removing the waste from the value stream, it is essential to confirm the smooth flow of the remaining steps without any interruptions, delays or bottlenecks. This may require breaking down of silo thinking and ensuring cross-functionality across different departments; a challenging task in lean programmes.

4. Establish pull

Improved flow enables just in time manufacturing or easy delivery of products to the customer. The customer can pull the product from you as needed and hence, you don’t have to manufacture products well in advance or keep the materials stockpiled. This is indeed a cost effective step for the customers as well as the manufacturer.

5. Pursue Perfection

Accomplishing the first four steps discussed here is a good start, but the fifth step is perhaps the most significant one: adopting lean thinking and process improvement part of your corporate culture. Lean is not a static system; it needs constant effort and vigilance for perfection. Every employee should be involved in implementing lean for continuous improvement.

For many companies, lean management is just the filtering of operational processes to minimise waste; but we analyse it on a much broader dimension. We develop strategies where in all the members, including management and staff can contribute to the betterment of the organisation. We help the leaders create a favourable environment that motivates the employees to learn about the lean processes and proactively help in the execution of these strategies for improvement of business.

The important steps in our strategy include:

  • Understanding your concerns; not just listening to them
  • Confirming your priorities
  • Providing lean training
  • Standing by your side in all transformational initiatives
  • Executing a clear path to betterment

We offer customised lean training programmes to organisations based on their specific requirements. We are pledged to help you develop a work culture where all employees and leaders act as catalyst for change and gradually evolve into practitioners of continuous improvement.
